In an age of growing isolation, particularly among seniors, the documentary film Significant Others offers a view into the world of robotic pets. These mechanical animals, which are designed to simulate love and affection, are quietly finding their way into long-term care homes around the world, offering comfort and joy to those whose opportunities for social connection may be limited. Significant Others uses robotic pets as a way to think about aging, companionship, and the role that technology plays in fostering social connection. Through a creative, critical, and empathetic lens, the film asks the question: Can a robot be our friend?
